You ask, we answer.

After publishing our article about children’s health,  we received a question about dysbiosis and how someone, particularly a child, could be helped.

Healthy nutrition therapist Deimantė Rapalytė-Kuliešienė explains what dysbacteriosis, also known as dysbiosis, is.

Dysbacteriosis (dysbiosis): what is it?

It is a change in the composition and characteristics of the normal intestinal microflora.

What are the symptoms of dysbiosis?

Symptoms may include abdominal pain, gas, constipation, and heartburn.

As far as I know, dysbiosis is acquired. Which groups of people are most likely to develop it?

Dysbacteriosis very often develops after taking antibiotics. People undergoing chemotherapy may also experience symptoms of dysbacteriosis.

What causes dysbiosis?

It occurs when the natural intestinal microflora is disrupted, the number of bacteria changes, and colonies of beneficial bacteria suddenly decrease.

Can dysbiosis be treated?

Yes, it can. Dietary changes should be made by avoiding foods containing sugar, wheat, and yeast. Specific supplements may also be included, such as ginger, grapefruit seed extract, and olive leaf extract, as well as homeopathic preparations such as Nux vomica-Homaccord.

What is important to consider when experiencing dysbiosis?

Diet, lifestyle, hygiene, and stress are very important.

Which foods should be eaten more often?

Prebiotic foods should be included, such as chicory, onions, garlic, asparagus, bananas , and oats , so that beneficial bacteria have something to feed on.

It is also important to include foods rich in probiotics, such as fermented vegetables, apple cider vinegar , kombucha, and kvass.

Antibacterial foods should also be included, such as garlic, onions, ginger, and herbs including oregano and marjoram.

Which foods should be limited or avoided completely?

Foods containing sugar and products made with refined flour should be avoided.
