Where Nature Meets Science and Innovation

We combine carefully selected plant ingredients with scientific knowledge, innovative processes and gentle production methods.

From Raw Material to Functional Product

We transform carefully selected plant-based raw materials into purposefully developed functional products by combining gentle processing, scientific knowledge and controlled production. This approach helps us retain as much of their natural taste, colour and nutritional value as possible.

1 etapas

Science-Informed Raw Material Selection

We select plant-based raw materials by evaluating their origin, quality, nutritional composition and intended role in the final formulation.
Our decisions are guided by supplier specifications, laboratory test data and an assessment of how different ingredients complement one another within a functional product.

2 etapas

Preparation and Production

Depending on the raw material, it is carefully prepared and dried. Gentle low-temperature air-drying helps retain its natural taste, colour and selected nutritional characteristics while supporting product stability and consistent quality.

3 etapas

Milling and Packaging

The dried plant-based raw materials are milled in controlled batches and carefully packed to help maintain their freshness, natural taste and consistently high quality.

4 etapas

Clean Plant-Based Formulations

Our final products contain carefully selected plant-based ingredients without unnecessary fillers, preservatives or artificial additives. Single-ingredient powders contain only the plant ingredient named on the label, while our functional blends combine complementary ingredients in purposefully developed formulations.

Science Woven into Our Company Story

Urbanfood’s connection with science began long before we created our first products. One of the company’s founders, Prof. Dr. Dalius Serafinas, is a scientist and President of the Lithuanian Scientific Society. From the very beginning, his approach to quality, systematic process management and knowledge-based decision-making has helped shape the direction of the company – from raw material selection to product development and production management.

When developing our formulations, we look beyond ingredient popularity and short-lived trends. We evaluate nutritional composition, technological properties, compatibility with other ingredients and the role each component plays in the final product. We collaborate with scientists, food technologists and nutrition professionals, basing our decisions on specialist expertise, supplier specifications, laboratory test data and practical trials.

We place particular emphasis on the fermentation of plant-based raw materials. We study how fermentation may affect sugars, organic acids and naturally occurring plant compounds, compare fermented and non-fermented materials, and assess their technological and sensory properties. This knowledge helps us develop not only new ingredients, but also more purposeful functional formulations.

Our scientific approach is reinforced by in-house production and continuous process control. Laboratory testing, food safety management systems and many years of practical experience allow us to evaluate not only what is known about an ingredient, but also how it performs within a functional blend. We therefore develop every new formulation as a complete system, considering its composition, taste, ease of use, stability and role in everyday nutrition.

Questions & Answers

Why did you choose low-temperature drying instead of freeze-drying?

When we began developing the first Urbanfood products in 2014, we tested different methods of processing and drying plant-based raw materials at the Agriculture Academy of Vytautas Magnus University. We were looking for a technology that would help retain the ingredients’ natural taste, colour and nutritional value while being suitable not only for small experimental batches, but also for steadily growing production.

At that time, freeze-drying was an expensive and difficult-to-access technology. From the outset, our goal was to create products that people could easily incorporate into their daily diet. We therefore did not want the accessibility or price of our products—or our ability to expand—to be restricted by the chosen technology.

Following practical trials, we selected controlled low-temperature air-drying. This method allowed us to combine gentle processing with reliable production and the capacity to grow alongside increasing demand for our products.

Over time, we also identified another practical advantage: powders dried in this way are generally less prone to absorbing moisture from the surrounding environment. When stored correctly, they remain free-flowing for longer and are less likely to clump. This is important not only for product stability, but also for convenient everyday use.

What does low-temperature drying mean?

The air temperature used for plant-based raw materials dried at our production facility is carefully controlled and does not exceed 45°C.

We use the precise term “low-temperature air-dried” because it clearly describes our process and our intention to avoid unnecessary exposure of the raw materials to high temperatures.

How do you protect nutritional quality during production?

Quality assurance begins before the drying stage. Before including a raw material in a formulation, we assess its origin, specifications, nutritional composition and intended role in the final product.

Controlled drying, careful milling, purposeful ingredient combinations and protective packaging help minimise unnecessary processing. Where appropriate, laboratory testing is used to assess selected nutritional and quality characteristics of the final product.

How are Urbanfood formulations developed?

The development of each formulation begins with a clearly identified everyday nutrition need. We then assess the nutritional composition, technological properties, compatibility with other raw materials, taste, stability and ease of use of every ingredient.

Our decisions are guided by scientific knowledge, collaboration with scientists and nutrition professionals, supplier specifications, laboratory test data and practical product trials.

What role does fermentation play in your research?

We develop and study fermented plant-based ingredients by comparing fermented and non-fermented raw materials.

We assess how fermentation affects sugars, organic acids, naturally occurring plant compounds, taste and technological properties. The results help us develop new ingredients and more purposeful functional formulations.

Do you use additives, preservatives, fillers or added sugar?

No. We do not use artificial additives, preservatives, unnecessary fillers or added sugar.

Our single-ingredient powders contain only the plant ingredient named on the label. Our functional blends combine carefully selected plant-based ingredients, each with a clearly defined role in the formulation.

Are Urbanfood products suitable for daily use?

Most Urbanfood powders and functional blends are designed for regular use as part of a varied and balanced diet.

Always follow the directions provided for the individual product. Some targeted blends and routines are intended to be used for a defined period rather than continuously.
